The Power of Puppy Rest Time

You've probably heard it before – puppies need a lot of sleep! Think 12-20 hours a day depending on their age. This sleep isn't just about catching up on rest. It's crucial for their emotional and intellectual development. The more relaxed downtime they have as pups, the more naturally inclined they'll be to chill out as they grow older.

But let's face it, the world is a fascinating place for a curious puppy! Between new sights, sounds, smells, and exciting playtime, it's easy for them to get overstimulated and overtired. Unfortunately, a sleepy but wired pup can struggle to settle on their own, and might resort to unwanted behaviors like nipping and biting.

The solution? Regular rest periods!

Think of it as setting healthy boundaries for your pup. Here's how to make it work:

Schedule Downtime: Create a rough schedule for your puppy's rest periods, especially after playtime or walks.

Cozy Relaxation Station: Provide a designated quiet area for your pup to unwind. This could be a comfy bed, a crate, or a puppy pen in a calm part of your house, away from distractions.

Calming Activities : Offer a calming activity during rest time, like a stuffed Kong or lick mat. This helps them wind down and lower their arousal level.

Be Preventative: The key is to schedule rest before your pup becomes overstimulated. If your pup is already hyped up, offer them a safe outlet for their energy in their quiet zone (like a chew toy) before letting them settle down.

Remember that your puppy is still maturing and needs a lot of rest time. Help them manage their energy and excitement by scheduling regular rest periods and providing a quiet, calm space for them to unwind. By doing so, not only do you ensure your puppy’s well-being and development, but you also foster a peaceful home environment.
