Step-by-Step Instructions
Set Up in a Quiet Area: Begin in a quiet area with minimal distractions to help your dog focus on the training session.
Calm Start Position: Have your dog sit or stand calmly in front of you. Ensure they are focused and ready to engage.
Introduce the Wait Command: Hold your hand up with a treat or toy and say "Wait." Take a small step back and pause for a few seconds. The goal is for your dog to stay in place and resist the urge to follow you immediately.
Reward Calmness: If your dog remains calm and focused on you, reward them immediately with the treat or toy and praise them enthusiastically. This reinforces the positive behavior of waiting.
Gradually Increase Wait Time: As your dog masters shorter wait periods, gradually increase the duration. Start with a few seconds and work up to longer intervals. Patience and consistency are key.
Introduce the Recall Cue: Once your dog reliably waits for several seconds, introduce your chosen recall cue (e.g., "Come!" or "Here!") in a happy and encouraging voice.
Reward the Recall: As your dog approaches you, reward them with another treat or toy and lavish them with praise. This reinforces the positive behavior of coming when called.
Increase Distance Gradually: Repeat the exercise several times, gradually increasing the distance you move away while maintaining the "wait" duration. This helps your dog learn to wait and then come to you from further away.
Benefits of Wait & Recall
